Hideaway: A Novel by [Nora Roberts]

"Reading Hideaway is like a mini vacation, as Roberts transports you from the sun-drenched mountains of Big Sur to the rolling hills of Ireland to the bustling streets of New York City." - Associated Press

A family ranch in Big Sur country and a legacy of Hollywood royalty set the stage for Nora Roberts’ emotional new suspense novel, Hideaway.

Caitlyn Sullivan had come from a long line of Hollywood royalty, stretching back to her Irish immigrant great-grandfather. At nine, she was already a star—yet still an innocent child who loved to play hide and seek with her cousins at the family home in Big Sur. It was during one of those games that she disappeared.

Some may have considered her a pampered princess, but Cate was in fact a smart, scrappy fighter, and she managed to escape her abductors. Dillon Cooper was shocked to find the bloodied, exhausted girl huddled in his house—but when the teenager and his family heard her story they provided refuge, reuniting her with her loved ones.

Cate’s ordeal, though, was far from over. First came the discovery of a shocking betrayal that would send someone she’d trusted to prison. Then there were years spent away in western Ireland, peaceful and protected but with restlessness growing in her soul.

Finally, she would return to Los Angeles, gathering the courage to act again and get past the trauma that had derailed her life. What she didn’t yet know was that two seeds had been planted that long-ago night—one of a great love, and one of a terrible vengeance…

Ms. Roberts usually writes romantic SUSPENSE when the book is this big. But this one has no suspense and the action is all second hand. Basically this is just a really looong and sloow moving romance.
Boring, uninteresting and definitely not worth the price.

I waffled between giving this a 3 or a 4. I liked the story and all of the characters however in my opinion, this story is very similar to Public Secrets, one of her earlier works which I love and periodically reread. The similarities don't detract from the story, however it made it feel like you could anticipate what was coming. There were also moments when it dragged a bit.

***Spoilers***

I won't go into too much details about the similarities due to not wanting to give away the story. You have a celebrity child kidnapping orchestrated by an insider. The boy who helps bring her home is her love interest. She keeps in contact with the dedicated cop working her case over the years (a father figure to the boy). Being tortured with reminders of her trauma over the years. Parent who keeps using her for publicity.

I wish the story hadn't ended where it did though. There was a final confrontation I would have like to have seen written.

I really love Nora Roberts and always preorder her books as they come out. This one was great right off the bat and dragged me in, though it does read similar to Public Secrets. However it just ended, no real twists or turns, It just ended, which left me disappointed and wanting more. That being said I’ve already ordered my next Nora Roberts and JD Robb. No one can hit a home run every time.

Let me start by saying I am a huge Nora Roberts fan. I have been reading her books since she started in the 80's. That said, I was disappointed in this book. It started out really well with lots of great characters, setting and excitement and then about 1/2 way through it just started to fizzle out. It was like the author just lost interest in the book. It had a few more exciting scenes in it, but was lack luster and then the end just finished with a whimper. Hopefully her next book will be more toward the standard that I am use to reading from her.

The ending was abrupt and as the reader I felt like I heard an entire song and then the song ends without the final chord - Like ending on Ah and not "Men". You know what going to happen to most of the bad guys, but 1 doesn't have really anything happen. But you don't read it. I'm glad I bought it - I couldn't NOT, but not one of her best. And thank you fellow readers for my next read. I haven't read Public Secrets in a long time. Cheers. Looking forward to the next one

I never thought the day would come. I need to ask Ms Roberts, did you just hand your editor one of the "spiral notebooks" you started your writing with.
I have never, and never will, minded your repeat story lines. For me they are all written with different characters, and different scenarios. Your books have me from the first sentence, as did this one. But sometime in the beginning of the book I had the entire story line figured out. And had to battle the boredom to finish it. Sometimes I have difficulty figuring on the villain, like in Whiskey Beach. But not this time. But thats ok.
This was a book that was discombobulating, and seriously headed towards boring. And I have never had that with any of your books that I have read. And this includes your Eve Dallas series. I have most of your books on my kindle and not a week goes by that I haven't reread one of yours. I binge the Eve Dallas series.
And the ending was really so unfair. You do usually end your stories abruptly, but this one should really have had an epilogue. You set it up with the sheriff stating she was going to get information and closure and then done.
I think I am going to do the library the next time one of your books comes out, that way I will not have to pay to be bored.
